Modern browsers update themselves, but only if you let them. A browser that is never closed, or a computer that is no longer supported, can quietly fall behind for months.

In short

  • Browser updates mostly fix security holes, so running an old version is a real risk.
  • Opening the browser’s About page is usually enough to trigger the update.
  • Safari updates come with macOS and iOS updates.

Why it matters

Most browser updates fix security flaws that attackers already know about. Websites also stop supporting old versions, so pages can look broken or refuse to load.

Check your version

  • Chrome: menu, Help, About Google Chrome.
  • Firefox: menu, Help, About Firefox.
  • Edge: menu, Help and feedback, About Microsoft Edge.
  • Safari: check for system updates in macOS or iOS settings.

In Chrome, Firefox and Edge, the About page checks for updates as soon as you open it. Restart the browser when it asks you to.

When updating is not possible

If your operating system is too old to receive browser updates, it is time to look at upgrading the system or the device, rather than staying on an unpatched browser.
