The French maritime company CMA CGM decided to invest in the Air Cargo business. Its new air cargo division (CMA CGM AIR CARGO) started to operate flights from Liege airport to North America.
CGA CGM is a well known french based company and a world leader in shipping and logistics. It also operates a global network of container terminals and stevedores that extends to the Far East, North Europe, Mediterranean, West Africa and North America.
The group want to evolve as a global logistics provider and developing a comprehensive range of logistics services.
It’s not the only Shipping company to expand in the air cargo business. Maersk is active through Star Air, an airline operating UPS flights out of Koln, and CMB (Compagnie Maritime Belge) is a significant shareholder in ASL Aviation Holdings.
However, CMA CGM will not create nor purchase and airline for its air cargo operation.
The group has decided to rely on two European companies’ expertise to market its services and operate its aircraft.
Instead, Air Belgium, which recently announced the arrival of four Airbus A330F, will operate those flights. ECS Group, a leading GSA, will be in charge of marketing CMA CGM AIR CARGO’s services.
CMA CGM AIR CARGO started its activities with weekly flights to Chicago. Other North American destination will follow with the arrival of the three other aircrafts
